Belen selected to be a MainStreet community

Belen has been selected by the New Mexico Economic Development Department to be the state’s newest MainStreet community.

While the official announcement hasn’t been made, the City of Belen is calling local and state officials and others to let them know there will be a special announcement about the program tomorrow at 1:00pm at the Heart of Belen gazebo.

Belen had been competing for the single available spot in the statewide program, which frees up economic development support and money for the municipality. Nob Hill in Albuquerque and Truth or Consequences also were seeking to join the program.

Now the real work begins. The City of Belen will now begin to organize citizens around a joint downtown revitalization effort with support from the MainStreet program.
