District seeks fast solution to pay problem
June 12, 2009
Belen Consolidated Schools Superintendent Patricia Rael said this morning that she and her administration continue to work to allay teachers’ concern that they won’t be paid for nearly a month at the beginning of next school year.
The issue first came up in late May when the district informed its 180-day employees that because their contracts start on August 19, a Wednesday, they will miss the August 18 payroll deadline for the August 21 check disbursement.
Rael said the district is looking at several options for resolving the problem, including adding one or two days to teachers’ contracts, which will allow them to be at work for the August 18 deadline.
“We’re taking a look at our calendar to start on a Monday instead of a Wednesday,” Rael said. “That would solve it. That would solve it. Or even Tuesday, so we can get it in there.”
Rael will consult with the district’s attorney before presenting potential solutions to the board.
