More on the denial of those low-bid contracts

July 02, 2009

The Valencia County News-Bulletin is out with its account of the Los Lunas Schools Board of Education’s denial of low-bid contracts by a 3 to 2 vote of the board, contracts which were expected to be awarded to the two lowest bidding companies.

From the newspaper’s article, here’s the position taken by Bernard Saiz, the new superintendent:

Saiz said the district would give as much business as it can “to our local vendors and local businesses as long as it’s in the constraints in the law.”

While it wasn’t explicit, the board appeared to decide to deny the contracts because it was believed the low bidders weren’t local companies.

Questions have since swirled about the potential ethical or legal implications of the vote, a vote the Valencia County News-Bulletin decided not to mention in its story.
