Recently deployed soldier suffers heart attack

July 09, 2009

The recently deployed soldiers who participated in a yellow ribbon send-off in Belen are now in Indiana and “doing well,” but one soldier suffered a heart attack because of the strenuous training, according to New Mexico National Guard Captain Jason Peete.

“One of the soldiers did have a heart attack,” Peete said. “The training is pretty intense — the humidity and the heat and everything else.”

The soldier was hospitalized and has had a stint put in.

“The spirits are still high,” Peete said. “Everyone’s really excited about the mission.”

The New Mexico National Guard 515th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion will, in a few weeks, leave for Kuwait and later be stationed in northern Iraq.
