Vialpando to run for mayor in 2010

July 24, 2009

Los Lunas Mayor Robert Vialpando says he’s running for mayor in 2010.

“My goal is to try to keep it a village as long as I can,” he said, pointing out that Los Lunas has grown to the point that it’s becoming a city instead of a village.

Vialpando was appointed to the mayorship earlier this year after former Mayor Louis Huning resigned for health reasons. Vialpando, who is serving the remainder of Huning’s term, will have to be elected in March 2010 to continue serving as mayor.

“People have been very supportive since I got appointed,” he said. “I was reluctant. I wasn’t sure. It’s a pretty tough position, I mean, challenging position.”

Vialpando, who served as a village councilor for many years, recalled himself being a shy kid who has accomplished a lot.

“I’m honored to be able to represent my people and the people of Los Lunas,” he said.
