Belen Art League forms youth division
September 15, 2009
The Belen Art League has formed a youth division, which will focus on encouraging the artistic side of kids who are in seventh through twelfth grades.
The youth division is the brainchild of local painter David Mintz. He said the professional, supervised division will provide hands-on workshops for kids, form art discussion groups and coordinate visits to local galleries.
Mintz has already taught seven art-related sessions for high school and elementary students, opening up art to kids who sometimes don’t get much art education as a part of their regular curriculum.
The youth division will participate in art league activities, even displaying their art in the art league’s gallery. Mintz said he hopes to offer a place for some of Belen’s infamous graffiti artists to legally hone their skills.
Mintz has been in contact with Belen Consolidated Schools to begin a partnership.
The youth involved in the program will need to pay a $15 membership fee. For more information, call the Belen Art League at 861-0217.
