Commission approves anti-rave ordinance
October 22, 2009
Without debate, the Valencia County Commission quickly approved a proposed anti-rave ordinance that last week took criticism from citizens who didn’t like it.
“I think this is as good as we’re going to get right now and we can certainly amend or add to this ordinance. I think we need to have something on the books,” said Commissioner Georgia Otero-Kirkham, making the motion for approval.
Commissioner Ron Gentry, who introduced the ordinance, said he hopes the law sends the message that the county doesn’t welcome raves, which are high-intensity dance parties, and supports the Valencia County Sheriff’s Department in enforcing laws already on the books that can stop raves from happening.
“We can make this a public statement as much as the effect of the ordinance,” he said.
He said the commission is helping county residents deal with raves by approving the ordinance.
The ordinance was unanimously approved and takes effect in 30 days.
