Los Lunas Schools mum on budget cuts

October 27, 2009

During its regular meeting tonight, the Los Lunas Schools Board of Education and the district’s superintendent didn’t address the budget cuts approved last week by the New Mexico Legislature.

That stands in stark contrast with Belen Consolidated Schools, which has dedicated three meeting to discussing the budget cuts and again tonight at its regular meeting provided public comments about the cuts.

The Belen Consolidated Schools superintendent and finance director continue to analyze the effect the cuts will have on the district’s budget, developing spreadsheets and making phone calls to ensure they understand the bills on the governor’s desk.

“There are a lot of details I don’t really know about yet,” said Patricia Rael, Belen’s superintendent. “And the governor hasn’t signed anything yet. I have to wait for that final word.”

She said the New Mexico Public Education Department will likely inform school districts about what kinds of cuts are needed once the governor decides what he’s going to sign or veto, including possible line-item vetoes.
