Becker Avenue construction completed

March 29, 2010

Construction crews working on Becker Avenue have put the finishing touches on a manhole that will allow the city to again reopen all of the street to vehicular traffic.

The work was completed today, with the fencing and construction road signs expected to be removed this afternoon.

The “Heart of Belen” project began under the Torres administration, with the intent to create an area of the city similar to plazas seen in towns throughout the state.

Starting near the intersection of Becker Avenue and Main Street, the city has gradually worked block by block to reconfigure the street and landscaping.

The first phase of the project saw the construction of the triumph arch and gazebo, along with new asphalt and lighting.

The second phase was included in the Belen Public Library renovation and expansion.

The third phase, completed today, included new asphalt and lighting in front of the First Baptist Church.

The two blocks of Becker Avenue between Third Street and First Street haven’t been reconstructed.
