Barela secures Belen quiet zone commitment

September 06, 2010

Rep. Elias Barela has secured all the funding needed to complete Belen’s railroad quiet zone.

Currently, the railroad crossings at Valentin and Molina roads, where the Rail Runner commuter train passes through, and on Don Felipe, Lopez and Mesa roads, where Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains pass, still require train horns to sound off to warn traffic.

According to a letter from the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), the quiet zone will be completed in two phases.

Valentin and Molina roads will undergo two to four weeks of construction work in December.

Don Felipe, Lopez and Mesa roads will undergo two months of construction work in April, with Belen officially having its quiet zone at the completion of that construction in June.
